Officer Terry Burnett with his new canine partner Ben.

...

During a bank robbery shoot out canine police officer Aron was gunned down in the line of duty while protecting his partner Terry Burnett. After taking two bullets Aron was barely able to crawl over to Terry who lay on the ground wounded from gunfire as well. Aron died after he made his way back to Terry and the story that was broadcast live by local news crew touched the world. Terry and his wife Jaime received sympathy and support from all corners of globe.

This story is something most of us can relate to as unconditional love and loyalty displayed by companion animals is very precious and dear to human life. For example studies have shown that the warmth and love of a pet can stimulate responsiveness in the elderly, particularly Alzheimer's patients. Animals give us joy and comfort when we are alone or sad and in some cases can literally save our lives.

In the case of Aron, Terry has decided to give back to the animals by fighting animal cruelty and neglect. As a police officer Terry has witnessed a great deal of cruelty to animals and tries to save them whenever he can. The loss of Aron has inspired Terry to do something more to change the disposable attitude of society. Millions of companion animals are discarded every year by being abandoned, badly abused, or dropped off at animal shelters, whereby most are destroyed through euthanasia. Issues of animal cruelty, neglect, and abuse present a sad commentary not only on the way society treats its animals but the way we treat each other as well. Perhaps our animals are a reflection of ourselves in more ways than we may realize. We all want loyalty, protection, and unconditional love.

Terry's desire to help the animals led him to the newly formed animal welfare organization ACT Now that raises public awareness about issues of responsible pet ownership and promotes adoptions of homeless animals. Terry says by becoming a member of ACT Now he has found a way to pay tribute to his late partner and companion Aron. Terry feels he can make a difference through ACT Now and ACT considers Terry and Jaime to be a welcome asset to the group. ACT Now would like to see the day when we have no more homeless companion animals and animal cruelty becomes a felony crime. In the meantime if everyone does something to fight animal cruelty and neglect we not only help the animals, we help ourselves in the process.
