You must proceed very carefully when making a big change with the color you are born with. You should enlist the services of a professional and keep a realistic end result in mind. The lighter the shade the more maintenance is involved; this means time and money. After discussing your options and desired look, the basic maintenance is as follows:
For all-over color, retouching is needed about every 4-6 weeks, although the roots may begin to show as early as 1-2 weeks. (Gwen Stefani is a good example.)
For highlights, 8-12 weeks is sufficient for touch-ups, but it may be sooner depending on how light you go and how many you have put in. (Penelope Cruz is an example of a dark brunette using Dark Blonde as a highlight. Elizabeth Hurley is another example but her hair is a Medium- Light Brown.)
Another option for going Blonde is a base color with highlights. This is when you lighten your natural color with all over color and then add highlights to the newly lightened base. The touch up is every 4-6 weeks for all over color and the highlights are added every 8-12 weeks.
